The eruption of chichonal
The chichonal was
discovered as a volcano in 1923 by the German biologist Frederick K.
Mulleriend. Before the eruption in 1982, the vulcano had an altitude of
1260 meters, and 1060 after it.
On
Sunday March 28, 1982 was registered an earthquake of 3.5 on the Richter scale.
It was followed by an eruption that threw rocks and gases to a height of 17 km
in the atmosphere. The ash was falling around the volcano. The April 3 around
the volcano there was intense seismic activity that anticipated the
arrival of another eruption. In the afternoon the volcano erupted violently for
30 minutes.
It is estimated that the Chichonal threw ten times more ash and gases than the Mount St. Helens in Washington state, USA. UU. The cloud was raised into the stratosphere about 35 km altitude and was extended by worldwide. While the winds blew the ashes to states of Oaxaca, Veracruz and Puebla and especially in Chiapas, the habitants of the region were evacuating to places more sure, also many roads were closed while the clouds were extending.
It is estimated that
the eruption of Chichonal, left more than 2,000 dead. Today, it still is
active.
